So,

My MBP 13" 2011 has been running just fine up until a few days ago when I tried to increase the volume while having wet hands - some drops mustve slipped through the keyboard causing a (what I guess) short circuit. Computer won't boot.. great.

However, I removed the battery completely and "unplugged" the internal keyboard + trackpad. If I use an external keyboard + mouse the computer boots up just fine - as long as I have the charger plugged in (seeing as there is no longer a battery).

Now, here's my concern and I was wondering if I can get some tips on how to proceed.

I'm doing rather "light work" - the most heavy stuff I'm doing is web development and 8GB ram + SSD (which is what my computer is equipped with) handles that type of work just fine.

I was thinking of just buying an external monitor and transforming my MBP to a stationary computer. I have also had my eyes on the 2018 15" for quite some time but can't decide if I wanna take the hit. I absolutely hate the touchbar which is pretty much what's holding me back, also reading everyones negative comments about throttling, overheating and what not is making me second guess buying a new computer.

So.. from my point of view, should I stick with my macbook, which handles my workload just fine, or upgrade.

Buying new technology is always so much fun, I get that, but from a rational point of view - putting in roughly 3k pounds when I don't "really" need it is holding me back. One thing I do know for sure is that once I absolutely feel the need to upgrade, it'd be a 15". 13" is too small. Maybe this short curcuit thing was a sign...

Thoughts?

You don’t need a 15 inch, the 13 inch without touchbar from refurbished will be less than half the cost of the 15 inch why not go for that? Hell even the little 12 inch MacBook will do you fine processor wise. If you can wait we should have a new MacBook before Christmas that may be an even better fit for you.
