so, my dad is ironing near my desk. my mac, ipad, external hdd etc are there. the iron shoots steam out, not directly on my stuff, just around on to clothes. could that mess up my stuff or are they alright. like, nothing could get into ports or anything???

As long as the steam doesn't hit the iPad itself then I don't see a problem. Just being in the same room as the iron isn't going to hurt.

However, if a shot of steam did in fact enter the headphone jack or the charging port I could easily see water damage occurring and/or the water sensors being tripped.

No it is not a problem - providing it is not a direct steam jet fully onto device.

Many laundry workers and dry cleaners use iPads in their working environments which have much more steam than your dad could ever produce from his iron. :)
