Steermouse and Logitech MX revolution question

I just got the mx revolution with steermouse since I heard it was better than the software included. However, I can't get the "thumb scroll" to work and also the middle scroll changes from time to time. Sometimes it scrolls smoothly sometimes you can hear it scroll little by little. I'm not sure which scroll movement is supposed to be correct or if my mouse is just defective.

The middle scroll can be adjusted through some terminal commands. The notes about these commands seems to be gone from the support page, but can be found here.

The thumb control should be modified normally through the Steermouse gui.
