Steps for jailbreaking from 4.01 to 4.1

Do I need to download the 4.1 update from the app store or will the limera1n download it for me( I am presently on 4.01). Also, before I update to 4.1 I would like to backup all my Cydia purchased jailbreak apps. How do I do this? I am assuming I will not to repurchase the apps again once I jailbreak correct?
