Steps to Restore phone and set up as new?

Okay, I've heard it mentioned that setting up a new phone for some has fixed battery issues...what are some steps that I need to do beforehand?
Namely how do I backup my contacts and calendar events and then import them to my phone?

Settings > General > Reset all settings.

Did it today . And no, it won't delete all your stuff.
