Is it okay to use any kind of sticker on a macbook? Are there some that will ruin the finish?

I assume you mean a decal (removable) rather than an actual sticker (adhesive backed); it would likely depend on the quality of the decal, etc.

If you want to put stickers on your macbook, why not buy a clear plastic case for it and put the stickers on that? Double plus, the case protects your macbook from scratches, etc. AND your stickers.....

I don't understand why anyone would want to detract from the beauty of the MacBook.
My son tends to stick "Monster" (the caffeine drink) stickers all over his laptops. Time will tell if he does it to the rMBP.

I hope not! That's like putting bumper stickers on a Ferrari!

I just use the simple "Nerd" sticker from MacStickrs.com.

Skins, such as those from iCarbons, DecalGirl, and elsewhere, are designed to not leave any residue when removed. They're not "stickers" per se, but can be used to create a custom look.

I'd go with the vinyl decals and not stickers as it may be difficult to remove stickers. I've seen some really nice decals over at Etsy.

Vinyl decals for sale will do no damage at all to your computer.
Stickers themselves will not do any damage, it's the removal process that does it.

What I've done is put my decorations under a clear hard shell case. They stay protected, and better yet don't even stick to my computer, they sandwich very well in between.
