Anyone else feeling the same way? Touch-ID provides a right balance between security and ease of use.
Face ID is way too creepy and implementation is fundamentally flawed (misjudging the intent to unlock / inadvertently unlocking when you don't want it to / someone pointing it towards you to unlock the device).

Apparently Apple has failed to embed Touch-ID into the display itself (while some other companies have managed to do this).. so in order to save their face, they decide to remove it completely, instead of at least putting it in the back?

My Surface Pro 4 from 2 years ago has awesome Face Recognition, even in total darkness is able to recognize me. Apple's implementation should be even better considering is two years newer. Wait until you actually see the product instead of base it on assumptions without any data behind it.,

As others have said, don't judge the implementation of this feature until we see the official release. Even after the iPhone 8 goes on sale and iOS 11 is released, you can bank on some updates that refine/improve the facial recognition feature. Personally I have never found TouchID to be that great on my iPhone 6. It unlocks the phone when I don't intend to (we are conditioned to use that home button, even when we just want to check a widget), and it frequently fails to work when my fingers are wet (from sweat or water). It also fails to work regularly with my left thumb, which apparently has some irregular lines and callouses. It works well with my right thumb (as long as it's dry) but rarely with my left... no matter how many times I re-scan that thumb. It's more convenient than not, but I'm hoping facial recognition will be more reliable. And it will work while wearing gloves! I'm sure Apple will implement some kind of option or feature for getting around the unintentional unlock possibility. Perhaps face recognition won't kick in until you press the home button again, or swipe past the Today and Widget pages.

I don't know why using face recognition is any creepier than using your fingerprint. Unless you have never used the selfie camera, I'm sure your iPhone already knows what you look like, but I guess I can understand how some people might be a little creeped out by their device "recognizing" their face as if it was a consicous/sentient being. Try not to think about all of the other information about you that your iPhone collects :p

Apple didn't "Fail" to embed Touch ID into the display, the technology was not fully prepared for implementation under the OLED panel for this years iPhone. Apple isn't a company that will release technology that isn't ready or shoddy in terms of someone's security. If Apple did release technology that was flawed or problematic, now that would be 'Failing' in the sense of something that was prematurely released that ruined the experience for the user.

Furthermore, Apple will also never put Touch ID on the back of the iPhone either. Never. Because they have already have a solution, which is with Face ID. It's a matter of you accepting it or ultimately finding another smart phone. But at least give facial recognition/Face ID the opportunity to debut before you pass judgement without you knowing otherwise.

You're welcome to feel disappointed about the lack of TouchID of course, but "other companies" have *not* managed to put fingerprint readers under the screen. One company has shown off a (clunky) prototype. That's all.

With current consumer-ready tech, it's between TouchID on the back and facial recognition. Apple apparently chose the latter.

I recall all the gnashing and grinding of teeth over the introduction of TouchID here on MacRumors.

-Too slow
- Won't read my fingerprint
- Entering my passcode is faster
- On and on

Doesn't matter to me either way. I use a passcode not TouchID.

I really like touch ID and it works great on my 7 Plus.
I wasnt really planning on getting the next iphone but if the removal of the touch ID would be a negative to me.
Here's to hoping next years iphone will include Touch ID but I find it hard. I think once Apple removes it they wont bring it back the year after.

There will be 3 iPhones from this year onwards, I don't think they will be called iPhone 7S, 7S Plus and 8. It will probably be given different names because Apple is now going to have three tiers of iPhone (probably iPhone, iPhone Plus and iPhone Pro).

No one is forcing anyone to buy the highest end version (Pro/8), most people will be buying the normal tier (iPhone/7S) anyway and will continue to enjoy TouchID. Next year, that TouchID will probably end up inside the display, I don't think Apple is going to bring back TouchID on the highest end tier (Pro/8) though.

Perhaps, after that, Apple will get rid of TouchID completely and use FaceID. Then you can either keep using an older iPhone until it dies, or suck it up and upgrade. Or switch to Android. Anyway, most people haven't even seen how FaceID will work or how it will be better than TouchID and keep talking about the "negatives", same way how those people talked about TouchID when it was first announced.

True, its all assumptions for now.
We dont really know what they will release, how many different variations and what each phone will have included for sure yet.

So much for Apple's R&D not being able to innovate with Touch ID in display. :p

Rumor is it will be faster than Touch ID so we shall see. I wouldn't dare use an outdated iPhone 6 though.

What’s the big deal with placing a fingerprint scanners on the back of the phone? It works just fine on my S8, and I’d rather have it on the rear than no fingerprint scanner at all.

It's an embarrassment to human intelligence. Apple wouldn't dream of doing it. Their teams are comprised of people of the upper intelligence bounds.

What I wonder is if this face ID will be constantly unlocking the phone as it sits next to you on a table? I don’t care how good it is, right now I decide when I want to unlock my phone and that keeps it secure. If everyone it sees my face it unlocks the phone that be horrible and a battery killer. I can’t imagine Apple being stupid enough to kill Touch ID. And my bank just got Apple Pay last week finally!
