I have an iPhone 3gs (new bootrom) that i've already jailbroken. The thing is I jailbroke it back when I first got it when it was on iOS 3.1.2 and has never been upgraded. I would love to have it upgraded to at least iOS 4.0 so that I can download things from the app store again and use the new features. I just can't figure out for the life of me how to do it. Do I need to get rid of my current jailbreak first?? Do I update it on iTunes first and then download the new jailbreak?? Can someone please either direct me to or reply with some simple step by step instructions on how to do it?

Tyvm :)

- Upgrade the firmware
- Jailbreak

The issue is now if you go and upgrade it your 3Gs it will upgrade you to 4.3.4 and the only way you can jailbreak that is via a tethered jailbreak. Tethered meaning you need to run the jailbreak application to reboot the phone.

I'm already on a tethered one so that doesn't really matter. According to the sticky I need to go to jailbreakme.comon my phone? So all I need to do is plug my phone into iTunes upgrade it and then visit that website?

Nope unfortunately 4.3.4 patched jailbreakme.com. You'll have to use redsn0w.
If you wish to keep an unlock do not follow the below;

- Download 4.3.4 Here - http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
- Download Redsn0w Here - http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/

- Restore iPhone to 4.3.4 via iTunes.
- If running Vista or Windows 7 Right Click redsn0w go to properties-compatibility- Check Run program in Windows XP
- Launch redsn0w - Browse for the 4.3.4 firmware. Click Next. Check Install Cydia. Cick Next. Follow instructions.
- When iPhone turns on, turn it straight off! Load up redsn0w - Browse for 4.3.4 firmware. Click Next. Uncheck Install Cydia. Check Boot Tethered Now. Click Next. Follow Instructions.

Enjoy your 4.3.4 jailbroken iPhone 3gs.

Why are you tethered when an untethered was released ages ago?

Also I won't recommend updating to 4.3.4 .
Upgrade when sn0wbreeze for 4.3.4 is released so that you can preserve your unlockable baseband for a greater resell value or if u need unlock any time ;)

Again I would say do not update.

Also do one thing..
Does Cydia show numbers in green on it's home screen?!?

D/l tiny umbrella and save shsh. Let us know what blobs you have.
You use either pwnage or snowbreeze to update.

check your numbers in cydia for the SHSH blobs; they are located at the top of Cydia when you open it and tell us.
If you have 4.3.3 on there you could create a custom IPSW (if wanted to preserve Baseband for value) or simply run a stock 4.3.3 FW w/ that blob to then jailbreak it simply w/ the website.
