So a little more than a month ago, I sent off my Late 2008 MacBook Pro due to wireless problems. While there, they found a bunch of problems and ended up replacing most of the parts in the laptop. Problems with the wireless included disconnecting and slow performance.
Well... I still have the same problems. Over wireless, I can only transfer stuff at about 3MB/s, even with a 300Mbps connection to our $180 Netgear WNDR3700 router, and I only get 4 bars from about 7 feet away. That fine for home, because I just hook it up to an Ethernet cable and let'r rip at 1Gbps.
My problem comes when I'm trying to get homework done in my student lounge. There, I struggle to get 1 bar of the campus wide 802.11G network. It's not the network either. My friends all get 4 or 5 bars on their PC's. I struggle to get 1 bar, and it's always connected at 1Mbps or 5.5Mbps.
I know that Mac's apparently have weak wireless, but this is a little insane that I can hardly pick up a signal at all while my friends are connected with 4 or 5 bars and always connected at 54Mbps. It acts the same on OSX or in Bootcamp with Windows 7 64bit.
The weirder thing is that it will all of a sudden get 5 bars and work great, but most of the time it sucks.
Besides the obvious and calling up Apple and getting it sent in the 3rd time, is there anything else I can do? Any particular settings that anyone knows about that will boost the performance? I already have the lower power mode disabled in Windows, so it should be working great.
