Really? This just baffles my mind. Most of my events are all-day events, so the calendar on this OS is utterly useless.

Will third party calendar apps have access to the drop down for a widget?

It's always baffled me as well.
Why Apple took out this feature is a mystery.
I have sent Apple feedback on this a number of times asking for it to be implemented. I was hoping it was going to be put back in to iOS8 but no.
Here's hoping that a 3rd party calendar app can implement it.

Shame on you Apple.

i dont get it either. doesnt show birthdays either. all i get is a "you have a full day event scheduled for tomorrow" how utterly useless.

iOS 7 was showing birthdays. I'm pretty sure iOS 8 does this as well.
But yes, that full day events aren't displayed is stupid.

Fantastical puts all-day events in Notification Center as well. I don't have much use for third-party calendars, but it was worth it for this one feature.

Fantastical brings a couple of other things to the table as well.

First, one app instead of going to two different apps to see/edit reminders and calendar events.

Pre-iOS8, the stock apps didn't do custom repeats (e.g. "on the 3rd Thursday of the month...").

Stock calendar still does not allow assigning a timezone to an event. And does not allow more than two alerts. All of which can be done via OS X Calendar on the desktop and Fantastical on mobile.
