Yes Apple's demonstration seemed okay - but think about how quick Apple Pay is with Touch ID on, for example the London Underground. You're eaten alive in London if you hesitate for even a split second at the gates to get on the Tube, so Touch ID was easy for just beeping in and getting through. Now we're going to have stop while people stare at their phone then put it back down to the touch pad. I think it's a compromise not a new feature.

Well, even with Touch ID there has always been a short delay until your fingerprint is scanned. If you want to pay very quick (like mentioned in the London Tube) you can pre-authenticate Apple Pay by double tapping the home button while the phone is sleeping, so your fingerprint is already scanned and Apple Pay is ready. FaceID will be the same thing. Just double tap the button a few seconds before you reach the gates and you're ready to pay instantly.

Why don't you authenticate before getting to the gate? You don't have to hold the iPhone over the pay area THEN authenticate you can do it before hand.
