Tried searching for a scenario same as mine but cant find any. So I am running tethered jb ios5 on my 3gs but never really got concerned on preserving the basebands so mine is now at 5.16.05. I read about old posts saying going back to 4.1 and then up to ios5. But since ios5 is no longer getting approved by apple is this not a viable solution anymore? Any clarification from others is greatly appreciated. Wish I can just update the baseband directly since I already have it jb'ed. Thanks in advance!

You gotta learn the differences between baseband, firmware, shsh blobs, unlocking and jailbreaking. All different and important things.
Like mentioned above the bb cannot be downgraded even if you do downgrade firmware.

you can upgrade to iOS 5.0.1 and point to 5.0 in redsn0w for the jailbreak...
now if you want to preserve BB then you can't do nothing right know at 5.X

Bummer. I guess I just have to wait for ultrasn0w to maybe do it one day. Thanks!
