Arrested!!

FROM VICTIM"S PAGE:

Update: (May 31, 8:37 PM PST) ARRESTED! An Oakland police officer just called me to let me know that they arrested the guy in my photos! BOOYA! The police used my evidence (email which pointed to a cab service) that he was a driver and tricked him into picking them up. Nice work OPD!

Prey is free =) open source and all that. I have that installed on mine. I haven't googled it yet, but if you are password protected get "honeypots" apparently it makes a dummy non-pw account for a thief to log into and then you can trace/pix etc

Meh, if this is a hoax then congrats for making it look soo god damn real! Just liked it on Facebook, got a bit of a chuckle out of this one.

Well I suspected it was an advert when I first saw it and now I'm back to thinking it's an advert.

Click on the link to the app page.. both sites using a black background (not a crime I accept) but the font colour on the tumblr page is the same colour as the menu bar on the app page. And they both have the same feel to them.

Gotta hand it to them, it's a genius way of advertising your own app.

I gotta say this app strikes me as totally unnecessary.

You pay money to a company in the hope (?):

that your computer will be stolen (insurance would cost you about the same amount and it will actually guarantee you a replacement),

that the person who stole your computer is so utterly incompetent that they do not know what the camera light on the computer means,

that the thief has no idea about this software, and is again too incompetent to turn off the wireless or wipe the drive,

and, that the thief somehow has the ability to steal the computer, but somehow lacks the ability to actually unload it for money,

I think this is a blatant ad created to drive business to the site by scaring / pretending to empower people.

I would hope Oakland's police department is busy doing other things...

I would hope that every police department was busy doing everything that they are supposed to do, which means catching criminals. Those that steal computers are not below the threshold of being worth the police's time.
