Stop a mail opening in split screen when replying

Is there a way to stop Mail app opening in split screen when replying? Its annoying to me, I don't know any other way to get rid of it apart from coming out if full screen, then back in, hardly a smooth transition, or am I missing something here?

it sometimes even attaches in split screen to other apps? eg at moment its attached to Photos, I don't want it there!

Click on Mail in the menu bar and go preferences, uncheck 'Prefer opening messages in split view when in full screen'
