At my school there is a film society, and we just basically make short movies and present them. However when I turned in my movie(quicktime) they converted it to wmv :( . So is there a way i can prevent them from doing this with some weird encoding process or something.

Ask them nicely not to convert your footage. But then they probably wouldn't accept any submissions from you any longer.

but wmv just feels like an inferior format, plus all they really need to do is download quicktime which is free to play it.

Then get on the governing board of the group or lobby to get the rules changed ... or better yet, start your own "video society" and set QuickTime as the standard.
