I use mail.app with my Gmail account using IMAP. I found yesterday, while searching for a file, that there is a folder on my HD that has a copy of every attachment I have sent through my gmail account using Mail. When I deleted all these files I got back nearly 2GB of space. How do I keep Mail from copying all the files into that folder? It seems so redundant to do that considering almost all files I email to someone will be stored on my computer anyway. Thank you for any and all help you can provide on this.

Try going to "Mail -> Preferences -> Accounts", click the advanced tab and, where it says "Keep copies of messages for offline viewing:", change the option to either "All messages, but omit attachements" or "Only messages I've read".
