I have tried to install a HP printer on SL and each time software update tries to find the drivers.

The problem is each time I re-boot, software update pops up asking me if I want to download and install the HP drivers. If I say yes, it tries and once again can’t find them and so the process goes on and on.

How do I permanently stop software update trying to install the Hp drivers?

Selecting the menu item update then Ignore update doesn't work (From the Software Update app)?

System Preferences -> Software Update -> Uncheck Search for updates

Now it shouldn't check for updates automatically so you have to do it manually.

But I do want it to automatically check for updates, just not to keep prompting me to update a printer file that it can’t find anyway.

How about putting it to sleep instead of shutting down? I can't find a solution for your problem... :(
