I need to get a new computer in the next month or two and after having read on here for the last week or so and I was pretty set on getting the higher end 15" MBP until I noticed that after I upgrade the ram to 16GB and the hdd to 1TB that the price won't be much different from the Retina model. So I am considering the lower end Retina one also, but will need more storage space if I do. So I was wondering what the best option is for that. Even the 512 flash storage wouldn't be enough on it's for all of my stuff so I would need to supplement either model.

Considering the $500 price hike, I am not (at this time) considering the upgraded version. I am deciding between the 256gb with a 1TB external hdd. Or I could just get the 2.6ghz non-retina model with a 1tb hdd. I don't usually need to access all of my movies, pictures, music etc. necessarily on a daily basis, plus I would like to have a second drive physically separate from the computer to keep time machine backups on to protect against data loss in the case of a laptop failure/water damage/etc. However, I haven't really dealt with external drives before so I'm not entirely sure what to expect in regards to ease of use or speed etc. Can I keep all time machine backups and other random files together on one external drive and access the files easily and fairly quickly should I connect it to the macbook? How nicely (or not?) does this play with itunes and syncing with iphone 4s? Or is there a benefit to buying a 1tb harddrive and installing it inside the laptop together along with the ssd? (I'm not even sure how to do this so I would rather not mess around too much with this if it's not much more recommended)...

I apologize for starting a thread on common questions, but I just got cross-eyed after reading all the stuff on all the other specs/considerations and after getting this far I'm just hoping somebody with some patience and some time on their hands reads this lol :) thanks!
