I used to be able to see the different file types while opening up About This Mac > Storage. Now it only mentions "Used Space" which is grey.

Is this normal? This is a brand new Macbook Pro 15" 2017 out of the box.

I remember I used to be able to see the file types in different colours. Example: Music, Videos, Photos, Documents, etc...

Are you sure it doesn't say "Calculating..."in that grey bar? Mine took a few minutes to update.

It doesn't say "Calculating...". Just Used Space.

I tried to rebuild my spotlight index, but still the same. Should I reformat my drive?

That view has been unreliable since Yosemite but it is surprising that rebuilding the Spotlight index didn't fix it.

Does Finder or System Information show the correct amount of used/ free space?

Yes it does show the correct amount of used and free space. It did show the file type, but it took a couple of minutes, although it wasn't saying "Calculating...". However, it went back to the greyed out "Used Space" afterwards. Not sure if it is worth reformatting...
