All I have installed on My Mac are the preinstalled + Skype. When I go to About->Storage, it shows that apps are using 42gb of storage. But when I go into Finder>Applications and get info on all apps, it shows that I am only using 8GB for apps. Anybody ever experienced this or know how to fix it?

----------

Also under About This Mac it says that there is 97GB free out of 121GB. I'm so confused.

Those About screens are known to be very unreliable.

You can download a shareware utility called Disk Inventory X and it will give you a nice display of what's taking up your storage space.

Run this command in Terminal to reindex Spotlight and it will fix that incorrect readout.

Code:
sudo mdutil -E /

About->Storage may be including app-related stuff from the Library folder in the Apps total.
