Should I keep 50% charge in the battery and turn it off? Or should I fully drain the battery and keep it safe?

I just have it as a backup phone and its well kept.

Thanks!

Don't fully drain the battery. Fully draining a lithium battery is very bad for the battery. My advise, turn it off when it's at 75% charge and put it away. If you can, charge it back up at least every three months.

I'd eave the battery at 40% or 50%. I think it should be fine. Check the Battery FAQ thread (I think that's what it was called). It has a chart and it says to keep it at 40% instead of fully charged.

From What I've read, Lithium Ion batteries "degrade" at a quicker rate at the extreme ends of it's charging capacity (Empty or Full).

If you want the battery to have a "long" life, it's best to store it near the 40-50%

So are you saying I shouldn't fully discharge my 4s' battery till it turns off at least once a month? I've read somewhere on Apple's support page that you should fully discharge, then fully charge at least once a month...

now I'm confused

That is correct for calibration. The 50% is when you plan on putting it away and not using it.

If it were a phone that you could take the battery out of, it would be simply a matter of removing the battery at 50-60% charge and be done with it. But since it isn't, the battery will probably be drained after a while. Like someone already suggests, charge it every couple of months. You simply can't store an iPhone for years and forget about it.

Those directions are for storing a lithium Ion battery. Usage is different.
