got a new macbook and im transferring about 80gigs of music. its a 150gb HD but obviously dont want to save this music on my HD. If i have a 500 external hard drive which all my music is saved on and am simply dragging the files from the hardrive folder directly into itunes am i in some way saving the music on my harddrive as well? please some help would be much appreciated

Yes, by default, iTunes copies all the music to the internal HD. You can uncheck this in preferences - before you add any music.

Not obvious to me, you'd still have 70Gb for OSX and everything else... I only got a 60gb HD on my iBook to start with, and 32gb of music on it;).
