I recently had an offer that would allow me to trade my old MacBook for an iPad straight up. Should I do this? give me the pros and cons

As a side note I have been using my MBP lately and jst using the old macbook as a back-up

How old is the macbook?

Check any sales avenues you might consider in selling that MacBook to see, roughly, how much money you could get for it, and compare that to the price of an iPad (assuming the one offered in exchange is in appropriate condition), and you'll resolve the price consideration. The MB may very well be worth more, depending on what the time and fuss means to you.

From there, only you can decide if it is worth giving up your MacBook.

Not much reason, really, to keep backup laptops around unless required for professional reasons.

An iPad is a gadget, it's nice but has limited features, it's mostly to access internet, mail and that stuff easily, if you need photoshop or more specific things then you should stay with your MacBook

Depends on the specs of the Macbook and which iPad model you are trading for.

OP already pointed out that this is a second laptop. ;)
