It's on the left side of the keyboard. I am assuming it's one of the fans, but I am open to other suggestions.

istat pro consistently shows the fan speeds around 2000rpm.

Am I right to assume that the fan is on its way out? If so, how much time do you think I have?

if there is no disc in the drive that is definitly a fan, i would cease to use the notebook and get it checked out right away.
 
i don't think its the hard drive, I think it's one of the fans grinding into something.
 
No MacBook Pro is perfect. I think the noise will fade away after a couple of CPU use.
 
I should add that I purchased it in August 2007. Santa Rosa.
The noise is not constant. Sometimes it will be silent like it used to be, but a majority of the time it's making that noise.
