In my purchased library of shows from Apple, I have 'Downton Abbey'. I generally use 'up next' in the appleTV app to access all of my content from Amazon, Apple, Netflix, etc..

Here's where it get's strange. Up Next always uses Amazon (which also happens to have Downton Abbey) instead of my purchased iTunes Downton Abbey. I have told the app to forget amazon for this task, but as soon as I watch one episode of Downton, accessed from my iTunes app even, Up Next defaults it back to Amazon?

This wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that when it defaults back to amazon it changes where I am in the series. Is this some sort of effort from apple to reduce their streaming demands on their servers? It's just such an odd thing and I can't wrap my head around it.

And yes, I like Downton Abbey.

I have notice the same thing with the show 24.

It is really annoying, and the only way to correct it is opening the show in the iTunes tv app, not the TV app, and play from there.

The TV app still seems like a half-baked idea, and it not very intuitive. To be fair, I haven't used it in a while, and things may have improved, but everything I go back to it just to see how it is, I am disappointed.

My guess @anthony13, LOL, is no. But, it most certainly sounds like a bug to me. If possible, report it to Apple here: https://developer.apple.com/support/technical/. Moreover, for the time being I'd do what @vertical smile suggested and open the show with the iTunes TV app rather than the TV app. Best of luck to you!
That's what I've restored too, the only stupid thing about that is that every time I open the series in that, I have to scroll over from season 1 episode 1, every time. Also jeez, it was just a theory you don't have to laugh out loud about it. "hey honey get a load of this guy who likes Star Trek and Downton abbey thinking Apple needs to save stress on their servers! What a marooooon." :)

Sorry, I've been a system tester for like 20 years and what you said struck me as funny. Anyway, I know the feeling. We joke that testers get paid to be frustrated all day long. And some days feel like they last forever. Anyway, I gave you the wrong link for your kind of bug. Here's the proper link: https://feedbackassistant.apple.com/new-form-response. Hope this helps!

Not sure if this will accomplish what you want, but....

Depending on if you watch other things on amazon, you could remove it from the TV app, either permanatly or just while you're watching Downton

in the aTV settings app, go to Apps -> TV, then scroll down to "Prime video"

I did it, but didn't choose the second option of "clear play history." All the items were still in TV, but it didn't have the prime badge on them. I'm not sure if selecting that option will alter your play history in the Prime app, or just TV.
