Strange behavior new Macbook & Word 2004

I have a strange issue happening in 10.5 on my new Macbook 2GHZ...I installed word 2004 and when i open my documents folder all my word documents have the nice blue and white document icon and then right before your eyes they will change to a generic icon. i have repaired permissions and the behavior is still happening. any ideas?

Sounds like you have TextEdit as your default document editor. To remedy this and make sure that Word is your default editor for all .doc files you can use the following steps.
1) Click once on the file in Finder.
2) Choose File -> Get info (or Apple+I).
3) Select the application you want to open that file under "Open with".
4) Click on [Change All...] to apply this globally.

It is just that simple.
