Strange Black Spots on Desktop

Hello!

So as I use my computer, go on the internet, use microsoft word, etc. Sometimes mysterious black boxes appear on my desktop. If i restart my computer they go away. It happens quite frequently and the boxes are in different locations and different sizes. What is causing this? Here is a sample of what they look like:

It sounds like the dialogue boxes are being blacked out for some reason, do the apps work normally beyond this?
 
Everything seems to be working correctly, other than the mysterious black boxes, as far as I can tell
