well this is strange...
i first noticed, probably a month or two ago, that sometimes when i tilt the screen on my mbp, a thin blue line would appear on the left side of the screen. the line itself is 1-2 pixels wide (usually one, sometimes two) and runs the entire height of the screen. it lies maybe 25 pixels from the left edge. anyway, the line would appear as i started tilting, and then disappear once i let go of the monitor. but only sometimes.

then the green line came. again, sometimes, this green line would appear just to the right of the blue line. under the same conditions as above, but about half as frequently as the blue line... i thought it was weird, but never really seemed to care, because the line would go away as soon as i stopped tilting the screen.

so maybe a week ago, i opened up my mbp lid and saw, to my horror, the blue line on the screen. it stayed for a few minutes, and then disappeared. for the past few days, its been appearing and staying (sometimes indefinitely) on my screen for no reason.

the line itself seems to be rather faint... but my background is always black around the edges, and it is a very bright blue against a black background. (not quite so defined when you drag a window under it, for example).

anyway, some googling failed me (a couple similar situations, but no answers), and im hoping that one of you has some advice for me.

id rather not go to the apple store if i can avoid it.... i hate that place too much to describe.

thanks folks!

I had a similar issue, what happened with me was when I was changing desktop backgrounds with the "tile" selection, a thin line like you describe would remain on the left side of the screen from the previous background.

for example, if I had a red background, and I switched to black, the thin line would be red, and if I switched to another background, it would be replaced by black. This happened 50% of the time.

It hasn't happened anymore under leopard, and with using desktop background as "Stretch".

Your internal display cabling is loose or has a small imperfection in it, this is something thats only going to get worse. You need to go to the apple store or ship it off for them to replace the cable.

I would also like an update. I have a similar problem, only when I reposition the display. But then today when I opened my laptop, it was there until I wiggled the display a little bit.

Mine is a 1-2 pixel solid blue line down the left of the display about 1-2 pixels from the edge of the screen. I don't like it.

My old MBP did not suffer from a vertical line, like yours. It had a horizontal line about 10 or so pixels thick running across the screen. It didnt happen always, just sometimes when i would move the screen up or down.

When i took it to the Apple Store, the Genious told me that it was probably a wire problem, but that the screen and the wire are one part, and cannot be replaced independently. The MBP was two years old at that time and was out of warantee, so I thought it was gonna cost me a fortune to get it replaced, but the Genious found this place that does flat rate repairs for Macs and the screen repair along with a load of other work came out to a grand total of $330 with tax.

ive encountered this problem recently since i started carrying my MBP around

ive been able to get rid of it by pushing the screen behind but it doesnt work now.
really annoying as its only 2-3 months old

anyone know a home fix?
i cant really afford to have it taken in to the apple store as i need the laptop for work everyday

Your have a defective LCD. Bring it to the Genius Bar and be prepared to listen to warranties and such.

I had the exact same problem.
As previously suggested, cable might be the cause.
In my case, it was the LCD panel itself.
When any sort of pressure was applied, the glass would make contact with the back of the panel of the lcd, not the MBP case, and result in those vertical lines.
I ordered a new one off of ebay (260EUR) and changed it myself, my warranty was out and I was given a repair quote of 700EUR.

Good luck.
