Its my first time running a benchmark and seem to be getting odd results.

My Computer:
Cinebench R23:
Intel Core i7-8700B (2018 MacMini)
Multi: 7084 pts
Single: Single: 1160

Reference:

Cinebench R20:
Intel Core i7-8700B
Multi: 2633
Single: 452
Source: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/long-awaited-cinebench-r20-released.2172306/page-2

Why are the scores drastically different for the same processor? Does it matter that the 2 benchmarks were generated on 2 different version of Cinebench? Is the score affected by how much RAM is in the machine being tested?

Most likely due to two different versions of Cinebench resulting in scores that are not directly comparable.

Cinebench says each version has its own scoring and to not cross-compare versions for scoring. I just ran it on my Late 2018 MacMini:

Processor: Intel Core i5-8500B
Single: 1062
Multi: 5596

So your scores seem to be in line with mine.

This is correct.

From Dutch Windows site Guru3D:

"Because of the code and compiler changes, Cinebench score values are readjusted to a new range so they should not be compared to scores from previous versions of Cinebench."

Other Windows sites have also mentioned this change in Cinebench R23.

Note that Cinebench like pretty much all synthetic benchmarks should be taken with a very large grain of salt, particularly because it is highly susceptible to result variances from background activities. Guess what? People run lots of stuff at the same time like Google Chrome with ten tabs open while they are reading e-mail or working on a spreadsheet.

Cinebench is heavily criticized by many Windows users for this but most of the PC review sites will periodically defend the inclusion of Cinebench (in part of a wider range of tests) because it's the lowest common denominator while also acknowledging its shortcomings.

As I understand it Cinebench is intended to evaluate a users system so they can determine how well it will run Maxon's Cinema 4D application.
