Instead of '3G' or 'E', sometimes the data icon is a circle within the usual box. Sorry if this was already addressed.

that is GPRS (general packet radio service) its slower than edge (if u can believe that)

This morning for the first time i saw a checkmark next to the wi-fi icon on the homescreen. Where did that come from! It was there for just a minute.

not quite as much as your post

this icon is explained on apple.com in the iphone manual
it still amazes me why people come here and ask questions rather than looking at apple.com or contact at&t etc

Amen to that...

Or, iPhone owners could navigate to this URL on the iPhone:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/tips/

and make a Web Clip of it. Then it's always with you whenever you have data on your iPhone...

(that would be tap "+" then tap "Add to Home Screen")
