Strange display issue, works fine if there's external monitor

My MacBook Pro Sierra (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) has a strange display problem. It works fine if I hook up to an external monitor. Once I disconnect the external display, within few minutes the whole machine powers off. If I reboot it in safe mode there is no issue.

Any help will be appreciated . Thanks
