This is a strange problem. New computer, but have just tried the DVD player for the first time and this is what happens:

Everything works fine and as normal, but when the movie has a part where there is a lot of black on the screen, the black/dark areas go very pixelated and a bit blurry.

Is this something wrong with the player, a bad connection, something that needs replacing or cleaning? Does anyone know what this is?

Thanks

OS X 10.2.8 Jaguar

Try downloading videolan VLC media player from www.versiontracker.com - it's a freeware DVD player - and seeing whether the same thing happens. This should help determine whether it's a prob with your drive or the dvd player program (which i've found to be generally a bit naff).

yyeah i tried using VLC and got the same problem. So its a drive problem?

Could just be a poor transfer.

Does this disk do it on other DVD players?
Have you tried different disks -- do they do the same thing?

the discs work fine on normal DVD players, its just in my computer. And i have tried lots of discs, all with the same problem so it is definately something to do with the computer.

I've got exactly the same Mac as you but with Panther.

Have never really liked the DVD player but I think it got better after upgrading from Jaguar although that could be wishful thinking.

I doubt that anything is wrong with the drive... you'll just have to put up with it.

Now that DVD players have become so cheap I'll be buying a stand-alone one that is region-free.
