Strange email problem with macbook pro

Hi

I have a macbook pro running Lion. I use the built in Mail app and use Gmail IMAP.

The issue I have is that when i send email, it is sent from another email address entirely - which is not even in the settings! Sure I have logged into this other email address from time to time via Chrome or Safari, but its always logged out when i close the browser, and how could that even matter to the mail app anyway?!

I really do not get how this is happening, it only started happening a few days ago. Is there some kind of virus for the mac I do not know about? Surely if it was a virus, it would do some kind of viagra email or something pathetic like that.

Both are gmail addresses but I have never used this other email address in the mail app before.

Anyone else had a similar problem?

EDIT: I have just tried a different email address (in the app) and it does the same thing (not a Gmail one)! I have also just setup my email address in Outlook and it works fine and does not send from this other email address! How weird! So it looks like its a mail app problem.

Anyone know how to reset the mail app to defaults? Or can I delete it and go again?

Are you sure that you don't have any forwarding set up somewhere along the line? Check the preferences and look at the "Send New Messages from:" setting in Mail.

Thanks for the reply.

Nope I don't have any forwarding going on. The other email address is one which is used by someone else but I access it from time to time to check the adsense account. That is the only reason I have ever logged into it, Ive not use d it for email purposes.

I only know about this because my friend said every time I send an email, it is being sent from his email address to him!

I tried another email address and that does the same too, yet when I do it in outlook it does not happen!

Is there a way to reset the mail app? I know I can delete it but I won't be able to download it again. Ive already deleted all my IMAP accounts from mail app and set them back up again yet it still carried on with this behaviour.

So in summary I have this problem:

My email me@gmail.com when sending emails it is sent from friend@gmail.com and not me@gmail.com. This happens on whatever email address I configure in mail.app

I like using the built in mail app cos outlook is very slow and cumbersome - it uses 90% of CPU a lot of the time so I hate using outlook.

I just deleted my mail and restored a backup, working fine now. Not sure what happened. Maybe someone hacked into my macbook and changed some settings thread can be closed...
