Strange happenings after upgrading

Since upgrading from SL -> ML, my computer has been slower and earlier today I had open Calendar and Firefox(wikipedia) and my screen first went black, then after a few seconds came back, and I was able to use it for about a minute until I got a light blue screen with a spinning wheel and then I got the login screen. I waited a moment and the screen went black again and then went back to what I was working on. What happened?
