Strange happenings with Finder

I know that some people have experienced difficulty when searching for items in Finder; this, however, is slightly different. Whenever I start typing in the search field within Finder, the system finds appropriate items - until I take the search beyond 3 characters. If I take it to 4, all results disappear even though I know that string exists within files.
I've tried re-indexing but no go.
