Apple replaced my first Penryn MBP due to a screen backlight defect. The second one seems much better put together in general, but the heat and fan behavior is a bit abnormal.
1. The fans at 2000rpm in the new machine produce a noticeable hum with the left side fan louder even though both are running at the same speed; the old one was virtually silent.
2. There was a 9 or 10 degree Celsius split between the GPU and CPU in the old one with the 45nm CPU running cooler than the 80mn GPU as you'd expect; the new one runs almost the same temperature on both chips, with the CPU running significantly warmer than the old one. These temps are on AC power. With Safari on a site like Anandtech with a badly programmed animated ad and using 60 percent of CPU, I get 54C on both CPU and GPU with 50 on the Airport card; at idle, I'll get 45-46 CPU and 47-48 GPU while the old one was probably around 40 on the CPU.
Any suggestions?
