Hi All

I am having a strange issue that has started since the last update and I thought it was the display that was the issue but I am starting to think it is my 14" mbp but not 100% sure.

A couple of days after the recent update a little over a week ago I plugged my mbp into the studio display with the included thunderbolt cable. Display remained black which was weird. I also noticed the light on my Satechi stand that is plugged into the display went out. All USBC ports on the display stopped working.

I thought, damn, there is a problem with the display so I spent 45mins on the phone to apple support and I ended up booking in to the genius bar but that was a few days later.

I then unplugged the mbp from the display and the light on the satechi stand came back on and all usbc ports started working again! Plugged the mbp in again and same issue as above, all ports stopped working. I unplugged, rebooted the mpb, plugged it back in again and all was working fine!

Now each time I unplug and plug back in I have to reboot for the display to work.

Would anybody have an idea what could be causing this?

I thought about formatting and doing a clean install on the mpb but that is a bit of a nuisance.

Thanks!

Have you tried removing everything except for the MBP, Studio display, and the original cable? See if the basics work first then slowly incorporate other hardware/accessories as it could be causing other issues.

Thank you for your reply. Yep, I have done all that. It is only a reboot that fixes the issue :(

I was thinking maybe the cable is faulty however when the mbp remains connected, no issues at all. If it was the cable it would probably be dropping all the time.

Very strange

sounds like it might be drawing too much power, so does the display only (no peripherals) connected to the MacBook Pro work at all? what about if you add the magnetic charger to the MacBook Pro, does everything work with the additional power source?

Nope, display remains black and isn't detected. The mbp isn't charging at all either when this happens. I haven't tried attaching the power to the mbp as it generally works fine.

Reboot and all works again until I unplug and plug back in at a later time. It has been fine since release day, it has only happened since the update to 12.4 on the mbp and the 15.5 update on the display.

I decided to do a clean install of 12.3.1 so will see what happens. Shame I can't roll back the update on the display.

yeah thats odd, I am trying a Studio Display and the first thing it did was not turn on but was detected by the Mac, updated it to 15.5 and it flickered a bit, then sometimes it wouldn't then it would. I've seen some similar reports on here as well for that. but yeah no way I can tell to rollback or restore the display
