Here's a copy of the same email I posted on the Apple forums:

About a year ago, a buddy of mine gave me a nonworking Macbook that he thought I could fix and keep for myself. He didn't have a power supply to go along with it so I borrowed my other friends power supply from his Macbook Pro. I got an orange light, but it wouldn't boot up at all.. nothing. No fan, no hard drive.. no lights.. nothing. So I opened up the Macbook just to make a visual inspection since I've never used or messed with a Mac at all over the years. I wanted to see if there was something noticible that I could see right off the bat. Nothing that I could tell.

I eventually bought myself a Macbook Pro and tried a few more times to power the broken one up using my power supply, nothing. I removed the hard drive from the old one and put it in my Macbook Pro to see if that was the issue, the hard drive worked great in my system with no issues. I pretty much gave up after that.... until today.

My daughter wants this Macbook for herself, so I thought I would mess around with it a bit more. I plugged in my power supply and the Macbook started right up! It got to the OS and then shut down.. this happened over and over again. I was able to load up the diagnostics by holding down the D button and pushing the power button. I ran the full diagnostics which took about an hour and the computer did not shut down. Diagnostics reported no hardware issues. I booted into the OS CD that came with my Macbook to try to format the reinstall, but it shuts down. I went into safe mode and it kept prompting me to shut down or restart for some reason and at one point it shut down on it's own. The strangest part was when I shut down the computer, the unplugged it, it immediately started on it's own and went through a cycle of starting and shutting down on it's own in an endless loop. This only stopped when I plugged the computer back in. I then read on one of the forums that I should push and hold the power button.. which I did.. now I the Macbook won't start at all... just like it did when I first got it. Does anyone have a clue what is going on with this thing?

Hard drive manufacturing date is 2009, so I assume the Macbook is the same.

Thank you.. and sorry if my email is totally confusing.
