Hello everyone. I have a new 2.8 quad. I recently have noticed on my activity monitor that one of the processes (kernal_task) is taking up 82 threads in my memory. Prior to taking the attached screenshot, I was in Final Cut Pro, but exited out of every application (and it was still taking 5+ gigs of ram. When I restart my computer, the kernal_task is still up, and it's taking 72 threads and there is 1.24 gigs being used.

Has anyone had this problem before? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

edit: I was also getting an insane amount of page outs during a big compression job while using Compressor.

Thanks!

The kernel_task is the Mac OS X kernel, which manages your entire system. If the problem disappears after a safe boot, then it is very likely that you have installed some old kernel extensions or some other old software. 5+ GB sounds too much.
