I'm about to take my Powerbook G4 down to Des Moines tomorrow to the Apple Store, but I thought I could get some feedback here.
Just recently, I've been having some very strange crashes up for a few days. I noticed my computer was running a bit slowly, so I tried firing up the ToolTech Deluxe CD that comes with the Applecare Protection Plan, and when I held down the "C" key to start the computer up, a kernel panic occurs, and sends a long line of text down my screen that ends with the line "panic: We are hanging here..." I figured it was only something wrong with the ToolTech CD, so I moved on.
A few days later, I noticed that my laptop had only 512 mb showing up out of the 1 gb that's installed. After a few hardware tests using the OS X install CD, that came with my laptop, determined that there was nothing wrong with my RAM, I opened up the bottom door to look at my installed RAM, pulled out the top RAM chip to see if anything was wrong with the bottom chip. Nothing appeared to be wrong, so I put the chips back in, fire up the computer, and to my surprise, saw that 1 gb correctly installed.
I was web surfing along a day later when suddenly that dreaded kernel panic box shows up, but then a similar line of text is flung down my screen (this time it's repeating), while a loud "KSSSH KSSSH KSSSH" sounds comes from my speakers. The 512 mb thing shows up again when I randomly check it later, and I put the RAM back in its place.
Obviously, I still hadn't made the connection.
Fast forward to today, and I'm running World of WarCraft when the same thing happens, except my screen goes black and does the same "KSSSH KSSSH KSSSH" sound. Not only that, but after a restart, I checked my installed RAM under "About This Mac", and it was back down to 512 mb.
If I didn't know any better, I would say that this piece of RAM is what's causing the crashes, and the Mac is automatically disabling the RAM until it's "reinstalled". Thoughts?
