This is how my Snow Leopard is looking right now:

I've no idea what happened, but it seems to look a bit like Tiger. Hope you got any idea about this curious look.

Since when does this happen?
Have you any kind of skin/theme installed?
Did a restart fix it?

Have you taken a look at Activity Monitor to see if something suspicious appears?

thanks for your quick reaction:D

but no themes were installed on this mac and a restart did not help (I also tried different color scheme's or resolutions, but it stayed the same)

Activity Monitor doesnt show anything suspicious under all processes

strange, ain't it?
