Strange Macbook Pro headphone jack

In October, my headphone jack died, because the soundboard that we plugged it into literally fried it, with smoke coming out of the speaker grille and a burning smell. I took it to the Apple Store and a genius confirmed it was dead, and I didn't fix it since it was out of warranty. Now, it just started working again. Its pretty sweet but is there any explanation for this?
