Brand new MacBook Pro, fully patched. Trying to setup to a pop3 server for the first time. The settings in mail.app are correct! But it fails to connect with the error message 'timed out on port 0'. Why port 0? It should be trying 25/110?

But I can telnet in to the server, log on and see mail no problem!

How can this be?

Some background. It has parallels installed and a bunch of windows techies spent time trying to connect it though windows. They could have done anything.

It needs a proxy to see out. It behaves differently if I setup a proxy on the ethernet connection for SOCKS or not. Without the proxy ticked, mail gives no error message just sees no outside connection at all. With the proxy ticked, it tries for many minutes before coming back with the error message.

This is driving me crazy, it is not my machine and I am on the point of suggesting a clean reinstall!

Thanks for any suggestions.

But Eudora works ?!

Even stranger. Eudora connects and works without a problem!
