Hi everyone. This post may be a bit long, but it has to be to be able to explain the issues I am having.
I have two Macbooks, one 2009 white Macbook, 4GB Ram upgrade, and one 2010 Macbook Pro, 8Gb Ram.
I had audio problems with the 2009 Macbook, as the headphone output stopped working and I resorted to using an I-Mic USB interface, which allowed me to use Garage Band to its full potential. However, I started to have other issues with this machine, needing new battery and brightness controls not working, so I bought myself a 2010 Macbook Pro to be able to continue with my recording projects.
My 2009 Macbook was running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and was really good for what I was doing, but the OS did not let me use some other programs I had purchased, eg Midi Guitar latest versions.
My newer Macbook Pro arrived with El Capitan installed.
Having read quite a lot about speed issues with El Capitan, I decided to purchase Yosemite OS to compare with the others. I also bought a 1TB hard drive to use for backups and clones of all systems.
Using my original 2009 Macbook, I repartitioned it, and installed Yosemite on second partition.
At this point I also bought the latest version of Garage Band and installed it on the Yosemite partition.
Everything worked just as it should, and once getting used to the new Garage band layout, I became quite fond of it too.
After a sudden rush of blood to the head I then decided to invest in Logic Pro, which I installed on the newer 2010 Macbook Pro. I have also re-partitioned that computer to have Yosemite, and Snow Leopard operating systems on it. I installed Logic Pro on the Yosemite partition.
So far, so good. I then bought an M-Audio Fast Track Pro interface to allow me more options of Midi and monitoring facilities. Everything seemed OK. I had downloaded the latest (also, sadly the last available) drivers for the FastTrack. The M-Audio site said that they could not support El Capitan for this product.
Then things started to go a bit strange, and got more complicated the more I experimented.
I noticed that when using the new Interface, all bass loops and sounds with bass content were "distorted", although that is not the correct word for it. All these sounds seemed to have a buzzing signal on top of the actual sound I was trying to use.
Now it got odd. The sounds I was using were perfect when I used the Macbook Pro headphone output.
I then went back to the older Macbook and connected the Fastrack Pro interface, and it worked perfectly, with exactly the same loop sounds. No "distortion".
I then went back to the Macbook Pro, and booted from Snow Leopard , loaded Logic Pro, and the sound was perfect using the interface. I was then convinced that for some reason the Yosemite OS was the problem, even though the headphone output was giving the proper clean signals.
Just as an experiment, I then booted the Macbook Pro from El Capitan and connected the interface, and the sound was perfect, even though M-audio had said it was not supported !
I then tried something a bit different.
With the Macbook Pro booted from El Capitan, I went into the Yosemite disk partition and loaded Logic (and GarageBand ) and both programs worked perfectly with the interface, no distortion of sounds.
This has got me totally confused.
If I boot the Macbook Pro from Yosemite I get this distorted sound with loops etc., from both GarageBand and Logic. Yet, when the programs are loaded from an El Capitan boot, via the Yosemite partition, the sound is perfect. I dont have Logic Pro installed on the El Capitan partition yet, as it is a huge download from the internet.
It is a mystery to me why booting from Yosemite should be causing this issue? I am convinced that my new Fasttrack Interface is working OK. I have checked all the obvious settings of bit rates and sample depths on all variations of the systems, and they all seem to be the same, and altering anything on the settings does not fix the problem. I hope , after reading this very long post, someone may have a simple answer on what to try to fix this. I dont need it it fixed to be able to use the programs, but I am just annoyed that I cant solve this issue myself. Hope to hear from some genious who might suggest a reason for this weird behavior. Cheers, John
