Strange screen errors and freezes

I have an iMac 2GHz Intel Core Duo running 10.6.8 and I get these strange screen errors - lines running through (mostly horizontal), distortions, rearranged text, and sometimes my computer will completely freeze and it seems to correlate. I tried to take a screen shot, and it worked, but then it froze. It did this before I upgraded from 10.5, so it has to be hardware related, right? I tried resetting the PRAM, fixing the permissions, I ran all kinds of diagnostics, but nothing. Any guesses?
