Until a couple of weeks ago if I put a file on the desktop it was just that. A file, or two or three, on the desktop. Now when I do this a folder is created Named "Today" and the files go into that folder. The folder then gets renamed to "Earlier". This may have started when I installed Sequoia 15.6.1. but I can't be sure. It's not a problem as such but does anyone now how to go back to normal behaviour?
This only affects my M2 Pro Mac Mini. It's not affecting my M2 MacBook Air.

macOS will automatically arrange desktop files in stacks.

You can click or control-click on the desktop to turn this on or off. This is probably what you are seeing.

Thank you. This is exactly what was happening. I never spotted that the "Use Stacks" option was checked and it's something I've never actually used before.

Thanks for your help.
