I realize this may be a ridiculously stupid question & the problem is probably due to something simple, but I can't figure it out.
I occasionally get a strange device in the "shared devices" list in Finder. It's labeled TAD, followed by a hyphen & a long string of numbers. It appears erratically, only late at night.
The strangest thing about it is that it's not sharing my router - it seems to be sharing my Ethernet connection. As long as Ethernet is plugged in, it's there. When I unplug Ethernet, it's gone - only to reappear when I plug back in. And disabling the router has no effect at all, so I know that's not the connection we're sharing.
I can also see this device on IP Scanner, where it's listed as an Apple device. It has its own IP address, but no listed MAC address.
The only possible offenders in my home are a printer and my iPhone. But the printer has never been set up for WiFi, I've seen the iPhone on IP Scanner & it's different, & besides, they would only share the router, not Ethernet. Hell, is it even possible to share an Ethernet connection like this?
Could this be a feature of my Macbook itself somehow obtaining an IP address? One of the things that's so strange about this is that it happens so sporadically - if it happened all the time, I'd be more likely to brush it off. But it openly happens occasionally, late at night.
