Can anyone else with a 2018 MBP 15" verify this behavior?

If I shutdown the laptop, the trackpad still registers a press, provides haptic feedback, and boots the computer. On my Late 2016, when it is shutdown, the trackpad is also off; as I would expect. The Late 2016 only boots with a press of the TouchID button or after a lid close and reopen.

Is this new behavior for the 2018 or is there something else that I need to look into?

When you shutdown your MBP and close the lid, does the machine boot up when you open the lid even though you don't press any buttons? I read in another recent thread that the 2018 MBP and MBA can startup when a key is pressed or the lid is opened. Many of the replies suspect that a "shutdown" on the 2018 models isn't a true showdown in that the computer never really powers off.

Yes, however the boot on lid opening has been standard for these laptops since their release in Late 2016 - at least on the 13" and 15" that I have/had/used. I was wanting to see if mine was behaving as it should, or if there is some kind of system hangup that is preventing a complete shutdown; recent Kernel Panic reports have me wondering.

In the Late 2016 models that I have/had/used, when they are shutdown, they are shutdown. You can press all the keys you want to, push the trackpad and feel no feedback, and the computer doesn't boot unless you either close the lid and then open it, or press the TouchID button.

My 2018 would probably boot if you sneezed at it. The trackpad still registers the press and provides feedback, and any key press also appears to cause the machine to boot.

Anyway, if this is normal behavior, I will get over it and move on, but that would kind of suck. I always shutdown my computer to wipe down the keyboard and screen, and it's nice to be able to mash buttons knowing that they aren't doing anything...if that makes sense.

It makes perfect sense, and that is exactly what another forums member was worried about - shutting the machine down to wipe down buttons and trackpad without activating the boot up sequence. I just bought a refurbished 2017 MacBook Pro non-Touch Bar and will do a few tests to see what happens here.
[doublepost=1546960387][/doublepost]Ok, this test was just performed on my refurbished 2017 MacBook Pro, 13 inch, two TB3 ports, non-Touch Bar laptop that I received 6 days ago from the Apple refurbished store.

Steps I took:
- Shutdown the machine via Apple logo > Shut Down
-- after shutdown there was no haptic feedback on the trackpad and random keypresses did not activate the boot up process.

- I closed the lid
-- opening the lid activated the boot up process

I wonder if the T2 chip/Touchbar/TouchID combination is what keeps your MBP in a quasi 'sleep' mode rather than a true shutdown/powered off state. I intentionally bought the 2017 MBP without Touch Bar because I didn't like that particular feature.

Based on the replies from other people, I'm guessing that the behavior you're seeing is normal for the 2018 models.

I just pulled out my Late 2016 15" and was playing around with it as well. Mine acted exactly as you described.

The difference has to come from hardware; both laptops on 10.14.2. I guess that's just the way it is now...

Yeah, it has to be the T2/TouchBar/TouchID combination. I guess "off" no longer means "off". The good news is that the T2 chip disconnects the camera and microphone when the lid is closed, so at least someone was thinking about privacy when designing the new laptops.
