MacBook Air M1 (2020) running Ventura
Dell UDCC22 dock with many external drives & monitors

here's the problem: lately, whenever I shut down, the MacBook automatically restarts.
no idea why! I tell it to shutdown NOT to restart, yet it does it anyhow.

then I get two more curious messages:

1 - this mac was shut down because of a problem (you guys know that one) ... if you want to open the same apps... (and so on...)

2 - one of the hard drives or volumes is not readable, so it offers to open DISC ULITITIES, but I can never figure out which disc is causing the error message.

I am tempted just to upgrade to SONOMA right away, and hopefully the new system won't still have this problem.

thanks for any feedback / suggestions!

oh thank you! there's nothing that matches the exact file pattern you mention.

Here's a list of everything that's in the folder - let me know if any of this is what you are looking for!

thanks again for everything

oh thanks, I forgot that the MAC OS sometimes has multiple sets of things like this.

I don't see anything marked "kernel" but there are three files with ".panic" - as follows:

panic-full-2023-09-29-162929.0002.panic
panic-full-2023-09-29-184351.000.panic
panic-full-2023-09-30-093914.0002.panic

also - are any of these of interest?

shutdown_stall_2023-09-24-000501_Wills-MacBook-Air.shutdownStall
shutdown_stall_2023-09-24-232759_Wills-MacBook-Air.shutdownStall
shutdown_stall_2023-09-25-215250_Wills-MacBook-Air.shutdownStall
shutdown_stall_2023-09-28-184340_Wills-MacBook-Air.shutdownStall
shutdown_stall_2023-09-29-154532_Wills-MacBook-Air.shutdownStall
shutdown_stall_2023-09-29-184102_Wills-MacBook-Air.shutdownStall
shutdown_stall_2023-09-29-184420_Wills-MacBook-Air.shutdownStall

thanks again!

Let's see... upload panic-full-2023-09-30-093914.0002.panic and shutdown_stall_2023-09-29-184420_Wills-MacBook-Air.shutdownStall just to be safe.
thank you again! they should be attached, yes!

that is weird ... I tried twice, and it's somehow NOT letting me attach them...

oh wait, there is an error message, Mac Rumors will NOT let me attach files these extensions.

I'll upload them via weTransfer and put the link below - sorry about that!

thanks again! sorry for the extra trouble.

w

Hmm, well looking at the panic log it's stating Halt/Restart Timed out (duh) and the last loaded kext is com.apple.filesystems.autofs, and the system thinks/sees the drives attached to the dock as corrupted, so, putting two and two together, seems like it's an issue with the dock.

Try unplugging the dock and test to see if the problem persists.

I was afraid of that! Oh well! I was hoping it was something as easy as adjusting a setting in the preferences (no longer called preferences) ... okay, I can do that, I'll unplug some of the drives. I just have to wait until later on, after a few deadlines have been met!

thanks!

there is a firmware update for this dock available on the Dell website. You need Windows to apply it.

really? there's no other way to get the firmware update? I don't have any kind of windows access at all. there's no mac alternative? rats!

Download Parallels (evaluation is free) and install Windows. Connect the dock to the Mac and let Parallels connect it to the Windows VM. Then try the update to see if it can detect it.

oh I have always resisted using parallels or other windows emulation software. Is it really easy? that's just a road that I never wanted to go down. But if I gotta...

Yes, very easy. Parallels will guide you through it almost automatically. I use a Windows VM on my M1 Mac Pro for proprietary work related x86 apps.
you can try to run the firmware updater with whiskey on your mac.
Wine almost never works for low-level driver install stuff.
