Hello all,
I am conducting an experiment at work in which I need to log into a remote machine at my lab daily and make a new excel file. Every morning when I wake up I simply open the most recent file and use it as a template, and then save it as the date.
So for example, this morning i opened file 20140726.xls, changed the data i needed to change and then saved as 20140727.xls. At least that is what I meant to do, but I accidentally hit command-S and saved over yesterday's data.
not a big deal i thought to myself, i'll just restore the original 7/26 file from time machine - and sure enough there it was. however when i opened it, it was the new file i'd saved over. with the data from today. i went back to the originally time-machined file and restored it again - still today's file.
it's not possible i accidentally saved it yesterday because it has today's data on it...so unless time machine is literally a time machine, something is screwy.
so i tested it.
i moved 20140625.xls onto the desktop, tried to restore it - and no dice. there is no 20140625.xls. how is that possible?
i googled this and there's some info about the way dropbox indexes but nothing definitive.
it's not the end of the world as dropbox has legacy data and i have my raw data - but this makes me nervous as I liked the peace of mind time machine gave me.
anybody else?
